Another Quick Update...

Thank you all so much for your prayers and concern. It has meant so much to all of us. The surgery went well but we are dealing with other issues now. Sue, her brother and I were at the hospital until 7 am today. Her mother has developed hallucinations and paranoia. After doing CAT scans they have ruled out a stroke. The staff feels that it is a combination of exhaustion and the drugs they had been using for pain and to ward off infection. I do want to explain how difficult this is as Sue's mom has never been like this before. She is usually easy going and witty and a very easy patient. This was horrendous for Sue and her brother as you can imagine. One of our oldest and closest friends was in to see Sue's mom this morning and she was quiet, knew who T was and smiled so we are hopeful that she will be more herself by this afternoon. Sue is exhausted and shaky and misses visiting all of you. You are all so important to her. If I can humbly ask, could you please keep Sue's mom in your prayers? Her body is healing well and we had hoped to bring her home by Tuesday. We just pray that this other problem will clear soon and that she will be able to leave the hospital on schedule. Thank you all for your prayers, good thoughts and for always being so good to my girl. Sue sends love and hugs. Bill

Don't worry. I worked a surgical ICU for alot of years and it was not uncommon to get what we called "ICU_itis" People would be confused and hallucinating. But in a few days (or sometimes longer) they were back to normal.
Prayers being said for all of you!
God bless.
Terri

Just dropped by and I'm so sorry to hear this! I agree it could be the meds. My son was hit by a car when he was younger, and he went through the same kind of paranoia and hallucinations. It got better with each day, and I'm sure that Sue's mother will get better, too!
I'll keep all of you in my prayers!

thank you so much for keeping us updated. Sue's mom is definitely in my prayers; praying that the hallucinations don't last and are gone soon, I can't imagine how that must be to see her mom like that. Continued prayers.

Prayers were started yesterday! I experienced this with my dad, too, and all came together in time. Please have Suzy rest, she won't be any good to her mom if she is exhausted....

We miss her, too!

Sue and Bill,
Last winter my MIL, 80, had a kidney and part of her liver removed and she did the same thing. She kept accusing her husband of 56 years of having sex with teenagers and doing drugs and all kind of bizarre things. She is fine now and doesn't remember a thing about it, but that doesn't stop us from kidding her about it once in a while. It did take a while though, an we worried that it might be permanent, so try to be patient and get some rest.

My mom broke her hip awhile back and she also had hallucinations after surgery. It was really scary (for her and us)! She was sure there were terrorists in the hospital and they were going to kill her. It's very scary to see a loved one in that much fear even when you know it's not real. I happy to report that my mom is fine now! It would be nice if they told the patient's family that this was normal.

I hope she's feeling better soon!
Bill-what a great guy you are to update us all!

Im no doctor, but I work with elderly and have seen this often. It is like some meds they are on they become someone they are not. I feel that after they get out of her system she will be fine. I love and miss you Susie Q.

I read the first comment here and it made me feel better. And I so hope that this is "ICU_itis" and it will clear soon, and all will progress wonderfully.

I hope Dear Susie will get some rest soon. Don't want her going 'down in a heap.' She'll not be able to do anything for Mom or for anyone, if that happens.

Best, best, best wishes for you all.

Many years ago, I was in the hospital sharing a room with a lovely woman who was awaiting surgery. After that surgery she was doing all of the things you described. Having had a little time to get to know the woman before and the seeing what happened afterwards, it was quite frightening.

The doctors said the same things about this woman and after some time, she was back to the lovely woman I had met. She even came to see me apologizing for her "dillusions."

I know it's hard to imagine that such a dramatic change can even be possible, let alone that it can reverse itself. But have faith.

You and yours will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Sue and Bill.. I'm praying for your mom, and keeping her in my prayers. My mom also had hallucinations after her surgery too. She was in ICU, but she imagining she was home in her room, but that my son and his friends had her tied up to her bed and wouldn't let you go down to the kitchen to get a banana!! I'd tell her about it later, and she couldn't believe she said that! Anyway, it was the meds they were giving her that caused that.
Keep us updated whenever you have a chance. {{{hugs}}} to you all.

You are all in my prayers. I bet it is the drugs doing the weird stuff. I had a lot of problems with them after my knee replacement. Didn't feel right until the last day when they stopped the drug IV. Good luck.

My father had his first surgery about two years ago. We just had an awful time getting him back to normal...We found out that he was having a reaction to the anesthesia. It made his whole personality change. It is very scary for the family. Please tell Sue that she and her dad are in my prayers. Please tell her my dad did get better and he is back to his wonderful self.
