...kitchen...have always been something I envied. Now, remember
I don't have a big kitchen. And after watching far too much of HGTV's House Hunters, I have
come to realize that I possess a kitchen "too small for any living human being" (Does this mean UNLiving folks will fit?), that has
"old fashioned Granny cabinets", and, for the pièce de résistance, is "positively grotesque"! All comments I heard last week alone about kitchens resembling my own. But I digress.
Suffice to say I do not have an HGTV dream kitchen. But I now do have an island...well...of sorts. But I like it. I really like it!
Recently, the vivacious and always glamorous Sue from Sullivan and Murphy,
and I spent a morning and afternoon sale-ing around garages and yards. *smile*
We came home *mostly* empty handed. But I had seen the cutest old sewing table bottom and wow. I wanted it. Sue knew I did but she and I were in total agreement that I NOT buy it!
Why? The lady of the house would not dicker at all. We tried for a measly 3 dollars off her asking price. She just turned and went inside. Not even a response! Obviously we offended her sensibilities.
We are pretty rude sorts you know. But this was a GARAGE sale. We were not in a high end department store. I may be a virgin yard sale-er but I have come to learn that dickering is expected and yes. Even desired! And we only asked for 3 dollars off! So we left. Uh huh.
So here is what Sue has yet to find out. (This is a little surprise for her by the way!)
The next week I was out with Bill and I asked him to drive by the house. We know the area as we had once looked at the house next door to purchase. I wanted him to see this house...and gadzooks!
They were having another garage sale. We pulled up and what did my little eye spy?
You betcha.
And had she come down 3 dollars? More like 15! Yippee!
So Sue? You were right!
Oh, and this is the first time I have shown off our new tile floor! What do you think? It only took us 8 years to do...next up? New counters. Let's hope they will go in in less time! *smile*

How strange that they were having garage sale after garage sale. Either way it worked out for you! I can't stop staring at your adorable dog bowls. Where oh where can my little dog get some of those? They look like Southern Living!
Were so much alike, it's funny! I love House Hunters, makes me wish I could buy houses and fix them up to resale for a living! And I've always wanted a sewing table just like that one, what a steal! Great post!
Love your new island! My 'island' is small, also, in my discussing (Hgtv words), builder grade kitchen. But we have had it for 40 years in several kitchens, and it works! As a matter of fact, I love to see my whole family gathered around it's tinyness trying to make a sandwich. We all seem to gravitate towards it even though there is ample counter space. Enjoy your find - glad you were able to get it for a decent price. Sally
Oh, I love your new island. The old sewing machine base is gorgeous and how nice to have something to use as a serving, staging or just plain pretty place to put things. Good for you, and how great the price came down. Hugs, Marty
I love your sewing table, Sue. Glad you were finally able to get it! It's the perfect island for your "small" kitchen. I have an "itty bitty" kitchen and I rather like it.
Your new tile floor looks great!
Hugs,
Donna
Did the woman recognize you? My hsb gets mad but I always say if it was meant to be it'll happen...so this was meant to be in your house!
Hi Sue, Glad I stopped by it's so nice to meet you. Love your sewing machine island, so clever. I have room for a stool in my kitchen. It's for the cat to sit on. Funny.

I love it!! I love your kitchen! I think our homes should reflect what we love, not what some hot shot says we should love.
Great job girl...it looks amazing.
OMG I was just on FB and saw this picture- and I thought Holy Cow- Susie Q found another sewing machine base!!! I cannot believe you went back and they were having another sale! Was "Mrs. Rude" there or was her husband? And to think I wanted you to pay $25 at the most... :-) I can't wait to see it in person again. xo Sue
I love that song by the way :-). LOVE the new tile and your new island. At least your kitchen is big enough for it. My kitchen is smaller than yours. I couldn't put that in my kitchen....I wouldn't be able to open the fridge or dishwasher!
Hugs,
Penny
WOW!!!!! You go girl!!!...hugs...m..
I love that island. Your kitchen looks so much like my neighbors and I always love that homey feel. The new floor is gorgeous...don't dis your kitchen, it's perfect!
Absolutely LOVE your "island". I love your kitchen too. I believe mine is small and very square. My kitchen has no personality. And I really have no room for an island. Wish I did...I have no counter space. I'll have to send you some pics some day and you'll appreciate your kitchen a whole lot more. Great deal by the way!
I love anything made out of those old sewing machine bottoms, legs, stands or whatever that particular piece is called They are perfect in so many places including your kitchen and I love, love the new tile. Don't those househunters just make you want to slap them??? I don't have a kitchen that they would even consider...er ...pickled oak cabinets...formica countertops and no counter space to speak of, but my family will tell you that I can whip up mean meals for 20 people and have a clean kitchen when I am done. Lack of space means you definitely have to clean as you go.
BTW, thanks for the compliment yesterday, but I think our houses are probably pretty even!
Well done Sue..!
It looks perfect!
Your floor is great, and things worth having are worth waiting for.
hugs
xx
I love your kitchen island. In fact it is very similar to the kitchen island/table I had in my kitchen at the farm...a decidedly smaller kitchen than yours. Mine was definitely a one butt kitchen.LOL Anyhoo...I like it and I love the pup bowls. Where did you find them? Molly is jealous.
Hey Ms. Susie Q....popped over from FB. I love your kitchen "island" and I bet no one else in the world has one like it. Those old sewing machines make great makeover jobs into other things. I have one but guess what I use it for???? A stand for my new sewing machine...lol...xoxo Lynn
I LOVE the island! And from what I can see you don't have a hideous kitchen. The beauty of small kitchens it takes smaller amounts of money to change things. I have a medium size kitchen now but I used to have a small, small kitchen and I miss it. You could get so much done and not do any walking from one end to another. It was very efficient.
I love that little island.
Ha...you got the last laugh! And won the prize too! It just proves it was meant to come home with you. Love it.
Now that the wedding is over, I'm hoping to visit more often.
Stop by...the wedding photos are posted. Oh.My.Gosh! Pure magic!
Give Miss Grace a hug from us.
Hugs!
Kat
LOL! I love that! It looks great. I don't think my kitchen is big enough for an island. I found a small rolling cart to use in the kitchen but I intend on shoving it in the hall closet when not in use!

Hi Susie...don't you just hate people like that....garage sales and flea markets are meant to dicker with the price...I have the same base and top only the Boss borrowed it years ago and that was the last I saw of it...it's up in his den with military figures ontop of it...Love your new tile floor...and I hope today finds Mom feeling better....Love, Sue.
Susieness! Oh, I so glad you went back and now this little beauty is yours. I love how it looks. Now, honey, speaking of kitchens, mine is a one woman cubby hole! My cabinets are all old and dinged up. I have Formica, yep, the real thing as my countertops. Your talking olden at my house. Your kitchen looks great to me and look at those little doggie bowls!
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Hi Sue
Thank you so much for your visit and lovely comment! I ran out of photo space on the "old" blog and had to start up a new one - so glad you found me :-)
Hope you are having a wonderful weekend! Rainy here (and only 1 garage sale to go to). Your island find is fabulous & I love your new kitchen floor too!
So creative! And such a blessing to get it so much more cheaply than you'd hoped!
I love it.
Gotta know when to hold 'em and fold 'em! Good for you! You did it right!
I LOVE this! What a fantastic idea. Now you've got my gears spinning. lol
